Modafin is a psychostimulant produced by the brand Alpha Pharma containing the active substance, Modafinil. It was originally developed in the late 1980s by the American drug manufacturer Cephalon for the treatment of narcolepsy, a condition in which people suddenly fall asleep during the day. About 0.02-0.03% of the population suffers from narcolepsy.
Today, Modafinil is used in about 20 countries. It is also used to treat conditions other than narcolepsy that also cause daytime sleepiness. In addition, it is sometimes used to treat memory and attention deficit disorders, Alzheimer’s disease and depression.
Properties and effects
The mechanism of action of Modafinil is different from that of amphetamine and ephedrine or other similar psychostimulants. Modafinil is also not formed in the human body from amphetamine or ephedrine derivatives.
Modafinil affects various parts of the brain. Probably the most important effect is to increase the speed of mental reactions. This effect refers to the lower part of the diencephalon, the hypothalamus, where nerve pathways are activated, in which the action of orexin / hypocretins is realized, which play an important role in the regulation of sleep-wakefulness as intermediary substances.
According to the classification, Modafinil is classified as a doping drug. Its effect on athletic performance has not been studied, however, based on its effects in practice, it is believed to improve endurance and speed. It is known to be used in bodybuilding to reduce body fat due to its appetite suppressing effect.
